Isabela Island, Galapagos

We chose to visit the Galapagos on a land-based vacation. We flew into Santa Cruz Island and then flew to Isabela Island. You can also take a boat from Santa Cruz. The flight is less than 30 minutes from Santa Cruz and there is a strict 20lb luggage weight restriction.

Isabela is four times larger than Santa Cruz. It is larger than all of the rest of the islands combined and is the youngest island. It sits on the western edge of the archipelago and has six volcanoes with all but one being active. It is one of the most volcanically active places on the earth.

Puerto Villamil, a port city to the south, is the largest town on the island. Its dirt roads, quirky restaurants, and absence of t-shirt shops gave the town a feeling of the wild west. I loved it!
